A half a century ago they survived the Holocaust,
But their suffering still continues

H.E.A.R.T. is a caring team of professionals and trained volunteers sensitive to Holocaust issues and dedicated to addressing the physical, psychological and social needs of Holocaust survivors in Rockland County.

This program provides a full range of accessible, culturally sensitive services that address the specific needs of Holocaust survivors and their families.

The ultimate aim of H.E.A.R.T. is to support and assist Holocaust survivors to improve their quality of life with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Survivors of the holocaust have built new lives but have not forgotten their losses.

Mr. Katz an 83-year old survivor of Auschwitz, recently lost his wife of 55 years. His crippling arthritis and diabetes had made him completely dependent on her. His sadness upon her passing brought back memories of his first wife who had died in a concentration camp . While still mourning his loss, he began to worry about how he would care for himself . How would he manage his meals, appointments and shopping? How would he maintain his social contacts?

Now, when he needs help and support more than ever, when bitter memories surge and threaten to engulf him, Bikur Cholim is there to help. A case worker is assigned and case management is set in motion. Warm meals are delivered by caring individuals. A home care attendant ensures that his healthy needs are met. Drivers provide transportations to and from medical appointments. A friendship is established with a warm and caring individual who visits on a regular basis. A compassionate social worker provides hope and support in the comfort of Mr. Katz's home.

Mr. Katz is no longer alone with his bitter Holocaust memories. Bikur Cholim has restored measures of hope, happiness, and peace of mind to his life. He knows that there are people nearby who genuinely care about his well being.

Mr. Katz now has reason to look forward to each new day.
