Through
the use of our daily bus service to Rockland and
Westchester County hospitals and the assistance
of our dedicated volunteers, this essential service
is provided for patients requiring transportation
to doctors and hospitals. These patients, many
of them seniors who have no one to whom they can
turn and others whose condition or treatments
make them incapable of going alone, depend not
only on the rides to and from medical facilities
but on the support and caring provided with that
ride.
Dozens
of calls come in daily requesting transportation.
Some requests are for local appointments, Good
Samaritan, Helen Hayes, Nyack Hospitals or to
one of the many Rockland doctors. Other requests
are for long distance transportation into Westchester,
Manhattan, New Jersey, Queens, the Bronx and Connecticut.
Some of these requests can be met by our own bus
service but many others require the assistance
of our volunteers.
As these calls come in, our Transportation
Coordinator begins her task of matchmaking
coordinating patients specific needs with
volunteers who are available to meet those needs
on that particular day and at that particular
time. The needs of the callers vary. While some
require only occasional servicing others undergoing
long term treatments will require transportation
on a regular basis sometimes as often as 3-4 times
weekly. Whatever the needs may be they are undertaken
with a determination to ensure the comfort and
sensitivity of the patient.
